Streaming TV FAQ

How do I know if my TV is a smart TV?

  1. On your TV remote, press the Home or Menu button.
  2. If you see logos or apps like Hulu, YouTube, or Netflix appear on the screen, your TV is a smart TV.
  3. You can also check the back of your TV for an Ethernet port (a spot to plug in a network cable). If it has one, that’s another sign your TV is smart.

What is the difference between live TV and on-demand services?

With live TV, your service provider determines when a show airs. You tune in at the scheduled date and time.
With on-demand services, you’re in control. You can choose what to watch and when to watch it. Plus, you can pause, play, rewind, fast forward, and rewatch your favorite shows anytime you like.

Do I need a device and what device do I need to start streaming content?

Yes, you’ll need a device that can connect to the internet and run streaming apps. The good news is, you might already have one!

Here are common devices used for streaming:

  • Smart TV – Most newer TVs already have built-in streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu, or YouTube.
  • Streaming Device – If your TV isn’t smart, you can plug in a small device like a Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, Apple TV, or Google Chromecast.
  • Game Console – Systems like PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch can stream shows and movies too.
  • Computer, Tablet, or Smartphone – You can stream directly through a web browser or app, then cast or mirror it to your TV if you prefer the big screen.

Will I have a familiar channel guide with all my favorite channels on my live TV streaming service?

Yes! Most live TV streaming services include a channel guide that looks very similar to traditional cable or satellite guides. You’ll see channels listed in order, with show titles, times, and descriptions — just like you’re used to.

You can usually mark your favorite channels, making them easy to find, and some services even let you reorder or customize your lineup.

So, while the technology has changed, the experience feels familiar — only now, it’s simpler, more flexible, and completely in your control.

What’s the difference between streaming TV on the internet and watching it over cable?

Cable is scheduled. Streaming is on your schedule.

  • Cable TV: Your service provider decides what channels you get and when shows air. You watch through a set-top box connected to your TV, and you’re mostly limited to your home TV.
  • Streaming TV: You watch over the internet on any compatible device — TV, tablet, phone, or computer. You can choose what to watch and when, often with the ability to pause, rewind, or rewatch. Many streaming services also let you customize your channel lineup and offer unlimited DVR recording.

I know I need internet, but can I still keep my cable or satellite TV service?

You don’t have to cut the cord if you’re not ready. But remember – you’ll keep all the high charges that go along with cable TV service.

Once you upgrade your internet we encourage you to test out various streaming platforms to get a feel for how they work (there are a lot of free trials out there). You’ll quickly realize you don’t need cable service to watch your channels, and we think you’ll love all the user-friendly features they offer.

What if I want to continue watching my local news stations that cable TV provides?

You don’t need cable to stay updated on local news! Services like YouTube TV, Hulu+ Live TV, and DIRECTV Stream provide local channels based on your ZIP code.

Plus, many news stations offer free apps or websites where you can stream live broadcasts anytime.
